Video art / August 2025 / Alūksne, Latvia, as part of the Latvian Center for Contemporary Art Summer School

Influenced by Alexei Gordin’s practice and lecture during LCCA’s Summer School, titled “Art, Agency and Institutional Transformation,” I collaborated with Kristofers Kārkliņš, Paula Stutiņa, and Smaranda Krings to create a conceptual short film exploring the complex relationship between the citizens of Alūksne and the ideas of contemporary art, the role of the artist, and the presence of the LCCA institution within the town.
Through a series of open-ended interviews conducted in public spaces, we captured diverse, authentic perspectives that revealed how local residents perceive art both as a cultural practice and as part of their everyday lives. The film also reflects on how the community relates to the institutional framework represented by LCCA, uncovering points of connection, distance, and dialogue between the art school and the broader public. By weaving together these voices with visual impressions of Alūksne, we aimed to create a nuanced portrait of place, identity, and artistic agency in a post-Soviet context.
